Cleanout Guide

How to clean out a garage in Seattle and Tacoma: a practical guide

A garage cleanout goes faster when you sort first and haul second. Here is how South Sound homeowners get it done without losing a full weekend.

5 min read·June 24, 2026

Most garage cleanouts in Tacoma, Seattle, and the South Sound start the same way: a homeowner opens the garage door, looks at ten years of accumulated stuff, and decides to close the door again. Here is the approach that actually works.

Before you start: what you will need

  • Three to six tarps or designated zones in the driveway — one for keep, one for donate, one for haul.
  • Labels or painter's tape and a marker for tagging items going to family.
  • A plan for hazardous materials (see below) — these cannot go in a regular haul.
  • A few hours, not a few minutes — garages compound faster than they empty.

Step 1: Everything out, then sort

The single most effective garage cleanout technique: pull everything into the driveway first, then sort. Garage interiors have poor lighting, narrow aisles, and tend to hide things behind other things. On the driveway you can see everything at once and make faster decisions.

  • Group similar items together: tools, sports gear, holiday bins, automotive supplies, garden equipment.
  • Only keep what you have used in the last two years — or what you specifically know you will use.
  • Be honest about the maybe pile. It usually ends up in the haul.

Step 2: Separate donate from haul

  • Donate: working tools, sporting equipment in good condition, clean shelving units, lawn furniture without broken pieces, holiday decor in original boxes.
  • Haul: broken furniture, single-use packing supplies, old appliances past their life, wet or moldy boxes, anything the donation center will turn away.
  • Donation options in the South Sound include Habitat for Humanity ReStore (tools, building materials, furniture), Goodwill (general household), and St. Vincent de Paul (furniture and household goods).

Step 3: Handle hazardous materials separately

Garages accumulate hazardous materials that cannot go in a regular haul: old paint, motor oil, fuel canisters, pesticides, and pool chemicals. King County Hazardous Waste facilities and Pierce County's SoundRecycles program accept these at no charge. Keep them separated from the haul pile — we flag any we spot during a job and tell you where they go.

Step 4: Get a haul estimate once you know the volume

Once you have sorted, you will have a much clearer sense of how much needs to go. A few pieces of broken furniture and a box of old electronics is a small load. A full driveway of shelving, appliances, and accumulated gear is a half-truck or more. Photos of what you have get you a firm number without a trip to the site.

When to call before you sort

If you are not sure you can stage everything in the driveway, or if there are large items like chest freezers, built-in shelving, or workbenches, it is often faster to have the crew help pull and haul in the same visit. Describe what is in there and we will advise.

South Sound garage notes

  • Pacific Northwest moisture is common in garages — open boxes before committing to donate vs haul, as contents may be wetter than they look.
  • Riding mowers, generators, and pressure washers often have residual fuel. Drain them before the crew arrives or keep them separate from the haul pile.
  • Homes being listed for sale often need the garage emptied completely, not just decluttered. Flag this when you book — scope and approach differ from a standard partial cleanout.

FAQ

How much does a garage cleanout cost in Tacoma or Seattle?
Most garage cleanouts run between $250 and $650 depending on volume and item type. A small load of broken furniture and boxes is on the low end. A full two-car garage with appliances and heavy shelving is toward the high end. Photos get you a firm number quickly.
Do I need to sort before the crew arrives?
Sorting ahead helps the job move faster, but it is not required. We can sort during the cleanout — keep, donate, and haul piles as we go.
What about old paint cans and motor oil?
Those are hazardous materials and need to go to a county hazardous waste program, not a regular haul. King County Hazardous Waste and Pierce County SoundRecycles both take these for free. We flag hazmat items we spot and tell you where to take them.
Can you haul appliances from the garage?
Yes. Chest freezers, refrigerators, washing machines, and dryers are common garage haul items. These carry a disposal surcharge because the transfer station charges separately — flagged in your quote.
How long does a garage cleanout take?
A one-car garage with a manageable load typically runs 1.5 to 3 hours with two crew. A two-car garage with large appliances and shelving can run 3 to 5 hours. Access and item type move the estimate.
